twenty-eight weeks. bumpdate!

lots to report this week.

first off, we had our twenty-eight week check-up this week along with an ultrasound.  they wanted to see how baby boy is growing since he was a little on the small side {19th %-tile} when we had the gender scan at eighteen weeks.  good news:  he's in the 50th %-tile now!  he was moving around & kicking & also good news?  still a boy.  we never had an ultrasound this late in the game with parker so it was interesting to see how much bigger he is now & how cramped it is in there for him.  he's just gonna get more & more smooshed as the weeks go on though!

secondly, i described all my pelvic/back pain issues to the doctor & told her i'd self-diagnosed myself with symphysis pubis dysfunction.  she agreed!  i has it.  unfortunately, the only good this does is give all the pain i feel a name.  the only thing you can really do is wear a maternity pelvic support belt & wait for your baby to be born... so that sucks.

basically what happens is your ligaments relax too much & your pelvis separates way too much causing lots of instability in your hips, back & pelvis.  this causes horrible pain when rolling in bed, getting up from sitting down, trying to stand on one leg & getting dressed.  all things i experience.  and apparently 1 in 4 pregnant girls get it too.  do you have it?  misery loves company!

the good news is that with parker it went away pretty much as soon as he was born when my body quit producing relaxin & the ligaments tightened back up.  so that means only t minus twelve weeks of living with SPD!

lastly, the other night i stumbled upon a post i wrote when i was twenty-eight weeks pregnant with parker.  it was all about how afraid i was to change & lose my identity once i became a mom.  i was worried about the change from career-woman to mommy-woman & if i would hate who i'd become.  this week i will be writing a follow up to this post as an answer to myself about how i've changed... but basically?  i would change NOTHING about how i've changed.

  1. How awesome I happened to check my Google reader the second after you posted this! Cami is taking a longer-than-usual nap. I read about SPD back when I was reading about hip pain and trying to figure out what I have. It sounds awful, but you seem to be one of the lucky ones for whom the pain subsides soon after the birth. I can't imagine living with pain like that forever! Also, is it just me, or are you smaller this pregnancy? I thought it was supposed to be the opposite! :)

  2. Ugh, I totally had SPD both times and my doctor suggested doing stretches. STRETCHES! He was a man, huge surprise, and I was like "You have no idea, but thanks." The good news is it went away as soon as I gave birth, but the bad news is you still have 12 more weeks-ish until that happens.

  3. Yes, had SPD with both my babies. The first one was worse and I had to leave work at 34 wks because I could barely walk... they only thing that helped was getting the baby out!

  6. I'm glad you are doing well. The baby is growing bigger; that's great! You look great as always! I'm sorry about your discomfort :o( It must have been weird looking back on an old post like that but kind of cool too!

  7. I have no clue if I had SPD back in the day... Just very uncomfortable that last few weeks - especially since all my babes were pretty big. But it's OK if your new little one is not huge 'cause you're not that big yourself & don't need more stress on your body. But it is good to be educated on the cause of the pain...

  8. Dude maybe that's what I had this last time! My hips actually slid out of place. It was excruciating and the doctors had no answers. It got worse and worse as the pregnancy went on but for the most part its all better now. Mostly. Although I still have occasional hop pain on the one side that always slid out. Not cool.

  10. i can't believe you're already 28 weeks along!! your belly is so cute!

i had a inguinal hernia repair in December '09 and a large cystic mass removed from my left ovary right, July of 2010...then i found out i was pregnant two months later. more poor pelvic area was shot and i had horrible pelvic pain the whole time. my job at the time had me working on my feet so i was miserable! not sure if i had SPD since i was never diagnosed but i understand completely about the pain and discomfort :/

  11. I'm not sure I had SPD, but I bet something like it. I had tons and TONS of back pain and would frequently get muscle spasms. I ended up in the ER around 27-28 weeks, because the pain was so bad I thought I was in labor. I could barely breathe it hurt so bad sometimes. My doctor recommended some sort of belt as well, which is why I thought they might be similar issues. I'm sorry you're dealing with it :(

  12. Dude. See a chiropractor.

I got SPD when I was pregnant with Hannah and it was terrible. I had to stop working for two weeks because it was unbearable to move at all. The pain was worse than childbirth, and I did it unmedicated. The only thing that helped was weekly adjustments with my chiropractor. It was amazing.

  13. I don't have that condition but I've heard of someone who does... They said chiropractor visits helped them, I think. I hope you can find something that helps!

  14. I am pretty sure this is what I had with Rebecca. It was horrible. I hated our bed. I hated our couch. Then I hated the recliner because it caused me to start contracting. Maybe you can get more back rubs from your husbnad out of this. I would try getting one of the supports to wear to bed. I bought one to wear after I had Rebecca to help my hips go back since we were done having kids and it was heaven on my back as well.

  15. I totally had PSD as well. I would wake myself up every time I moved in bed because of the pain. And the groans that would come from my side of the bed would sometimes wake up my husband! The ONLY thing that made it worth it was that I figured all that stretching is going to make for an easier delivery. And it totally did -- four pushes that our little lady arrived! And my PSD went away basically within days of having her. Hang in there! It'll all be worth it once he's here.
