flashback friday: {dominoe}

i've mentioned a few times what an awesome dog i grew up with.  dominoe was my 4H dog {yes, i was awesome & in 4H, thankyouverymuch} & was the best furry little friend a girl coulda had for thirteen years.  i got him as a puppy at twelve & had to put him down just before my 26th birthday.  he was with me through middle school, high school, college, & marriage.

anywho, if you're not a dog person this might be boring to you but if you are, you'll probably understand.  it's interesting to me how even though he's been gone over two years now, i still miss that little guy.  i can still hear the way he would greet us when we got home, the noises he would make when his ear was rubbed, & the smell of his leathery puppy feet.

i'm not sure when we'll be ready for another dog, & when that time does come, i don't think he'll be an indoor dog.  he definitely won't be sleeping on our bed, to say the least.  but i definitely want a dog for parker to grow up with... the bond between a kid & their dog is a very very important thing.

so, here's a little trip down memory lane featuring my bestest furry little friend, dominoe.

circa 1996.  i'm fourteen, he's one.
left: circa 2000.  i'm eighteen, he's five.  right: the college years.
where dominoe slept in my apartment at college.

dominoe put up with a lot from amylee on Vimeo.
dominoe came with me as part of the deal when sam & i got married.  good thing he stole sam's heart too.
circa july 2008.  one month before we had to put dominoe down.
dominoe's paw prints.  taken before we left the vet's office when he was put down.

  2. this really brought up some feelings for me. we had a dog named rocky that was pretty much in the situation that dominoe was in. i know how hard it was for you. ugh. i never grieved so hard in my life before we had to put him down. literally, i cried on and off for weeks... pretty much everytime i got a chance to sit and just think about it. i'm sorry dude.

  3. this made me cry. it's amazing how much dogs become a part of your family. eric and i both went through our long-time family dogs being put down last year, and it was really tough, even though we didn't get to see them on a daily basis.

i can't imagine coming home every day to a wagging tail for 13 years and then having that taken away. i'm sure parker will love having the opportunity to experience that bond someday.

  7. Teared up when I read this post, then went to the post on why you put him down and now I'm balling. Brought up a lot of emotions for me. I had a family dog in high school and when she was 5 we had to put her down becasue she had cancer. I didn't live near my parents at the time and had to say goodbye early and my Dad had to rip me away, I didn't want to leave her. Dogs are truly our best friends and it's never easy saying goodbye. I like to pretend now that our two dogs will live forever becasue I can't bare going through all that again but I couldn't bare not having a dog. My daughter loves ours, they're so fun to watch. I hope you get another dog soon. :)

  10. What a beautiful dog! I love that he went to college with you. Awesome! Wow, I missed a lot in the last month. It may take me a while to get caught up if I ever do, but I love the pictures!

  11. Jeebis, those paw prints choked me up at the end. I got a little shi tsu for my 4th birthday and named him Freeway (explanation: I used to watch Heart to Heart with my grandma). Boy did he put up with a lot! I used to dress him in my cabbage patch doll clothes. Unfortunately they never live long enough, and Freeway passed away at 14 years old. I fostered a dog last year but he got adopted in August. I have been going through total doggy withdrawal the last few weeks. It's amazing how they just creep right into your heart. Thanks for the wonderful post!

  13. Okay, so I didn't read the post, I'm not going to lie. I have a hard time reading flashback posts about animals, dogs/cats/horses- because I'm afraid of how they're going to end. I'm the lady in the movie theater that sobs when the hamster gets lost.

But, I did go straight through the pictures, with my 2 year old son on my lap, and we watched the video together, and now he won't stop talking about "hundred and one dalmation on da comptuter!!!". I can tell that thats one loved (and gorgeous) dog. No matter what the story that goes along with the pictures are.

  15. I've been a total stalker on your blog for awhile, but never commented before. :)

First off, love your blog. Parker is adorable and your whole family is cute!

And second, I'm so sorry about Dominoe. Dogs really are man's (or woman's) best friends. They put up with so much, and never stop loving you through it all.

My family got a dog when I was in HS, and she stayed home when I left for college. After getting married and moving to a new town, it took me awhile to convince the hubs that we should get a dog (he's never had one before). Now, we can't imagine our lives without him... and dread the day that he'll be gone. But we'll still remember all the good times with him. :)

Your post made me cry - especially those paw prints. But what a great way to remember him by.

  16. What a cute doggie! We are trying to figure that out, too-- I definitely want Niall to grow up with a dog (he LOVES dogs)... but Matt is extremely allergic. We're gonna have to work out an outdoor situation. Matt swears he'll build a bomb diggy dog house with AC and heat. Hmmm, doubtful, but we'll see :)

  17. such a heart warming post. I read them both, I cried and grabbed my puppy and petted her after reading both of them. Losing a pet is hard and when your ready you'll get another one but they will never replace how Domino captured your hearts and souls.

  18. That broke my heart. I had a Dalmatian (with brown spots, I think they call it a Liver Dalmatian) and we had to put ours down a few years ago. I still miss her :(

Your dog was a beauty...I gotta say the pictures with the colored spots was my fave :)

  20. I love the "college years" photo! DEFINITELY got an outloud laugh from me!
He looks like such a good dog! May his memory always live with your and your family - such a hard thing to experience, putting a loved dog down. I've had to twice. Dogs bring SO MUCH JOY!

  21. Aww...I totally understand how attached you can get with animals. I had 2 pomeranians growing up. One was 13 when we had to put him down, and the other was 18. I got them when I was little and they lived through when I was in college and beyond. After I got married, I bought another dog that I completely adore. I'm going to be so devastated when she passes. I'm hoping she will live a long, long life like my 18yo pomeranian.
